Cortez Hits U23 South American Championships Auto Qualifier at K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Wichita State pole vaulter cleared 3.91m/12'10", hitting the auto qualifying mark for the U23 South American Championships Friday at R.V. Christian Track.

The sophomore transfer from Cowley was the top collegiate jumper, finishing in second behind Wichita State pole vault coach Aliyah Welter, who cleared 4.21m/13'9.75". Cortez, a Lima, Peru native, needed to get 3.90m to qualify for the championships and cleared 3.91m on first attempt. Her mark ranks seventh all time in Shocker history.

In the horizontal jumps, junior got the sweep, winning the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 12.
